JOE 90

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Okay, so this was a kid’s tv show. A Gerry Anderson production, hence the puppets. But I think it underscores the basically creepy nature of children’s fantasy tv in the UK. Not as out-and-out fucking strange as, say, THE CHANGES or SKY. But, really, without any context — or, hell, even with it — the intro to JOE 90 is still kind of nervous-making. I didn’t particularly like this show even as a kid. There was something essentially Wrong about it. Stick a kid with fucked-up eyes in a huge spinning machine with pulsating lights while computers ooze magnetic tape like worms. The machine he’s in, by the way, is called The Big Rat. Which is also kind of Wrong.

I want to get from the IU campus to a certain place in Indianapolis in the shortest amount of time possible, and I need the vehicle to pick me up from my apartment. What's the best mode of transportation and/or company to go about doing this?

British SF TV: Some Bits

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I realised how little that old British sf tv has still penetrated beyond our borders (and probably a couple of generations) when I made Joss Whedon look at the credits sequence for JOE 90 and got a WTF? from him. So, while I’m waiting for my forebrain to spool up this afternoon, I thought I’d YouTube a bit and collect up some stuff that some of you may never have seen (and some of you will get hideous flashbacks off):

THE TOMORROW PEOPLE:

QUATERMASS AND THE PIT:

BLAKE’S SEVEN:

SAPPHIRE AND STEEL:

DON GALA PART 1

YAKPTH! It was so hot and I was terribly nervous. We were supposed to have a big smiles on our faces and be perky but I was so worried about my next step that it was hard not to look like a rude asshat. ^^ But oh well, at least I had fun and tomorrow I get to do it all over again in zenith afternoon heat and humidity for hours and hours and hours!!!

I can't wait!

I think the look we were going for was Japan's answer to Rosie the Riveter. Though of the array of costumes displayed this evening, our's was the most traditional as in we didn't have feathers, tulle, neon chords or spangles sticking out of our bums.

How to look like an asshat from the back...^^

Aaaand one more out of blurred asshattery...

More tomorrow! Good night!

DON'T CALL ME JUNIOR

Joyce and Walky!: May scar your mind's eye.

When I got my other two Indiana Jones figures, I felt something wasn't right. Something was missing!

It was the tie! He needs the tie!

The strongest mental image I have of Indiana Jones is his appearance in Last Crusade, in which he started out in more formal wear, later adding the jacket and hat. It's that tie, man. He was missing it. I found two of the Last Crusade Indy the other day, the only dregs remaining of the elusive third wave. WHERE IS MY GRAIL KNIGHT? WHERE IS MY HENRY JONES SR?! Oh well. I have a better Indy. Better to my mental recollection, anyway.

He comes with a sub-machine gun, so he's the "DON'T CALL ME JUNIOR" scene Indy. Sweet! I especially like the giant starburst call-out on the packaging that advertises the gun. He also comes with the whip and his satchel and a belt to hold the whip. Not bad. Hat doesn't come off, unlike the Older Indy I picked up, but I don't mind. Likeness is a little better, too, I think.

SERIOUSLY WHERE IS MY GRAIL KNIGHT

NO HERO #1: Pencil Art Preview

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I just threw some of Juan Jose Ryp’s pencilled pages up at Whitechapel. Here’s one, in smaller size — the others are over here, all in larger size.

NO HERO #1 is published in September. (Avatar released the #0 issue, containing the crucial first chapter, ahead of BLACK SUMMER #7, which ships next week.)

Ok kids, as if there isn't enough going on with me right now...

Job potential!!

The voice team has an opening!!!  It would be a fairly technical spot on the customer/administrator based side of the team, with the potential to migrate to a Project Manager spot in time when my skills are up.  I like the manager and the team lead.

I AM STILL UNCERTAIN.

I hate change.

I want to do an at home seaweed wrap (like you'd get at a spa).... does anyone know of a place where they sell seaweed, seaweed paste, dried seaweed....you get the picture

Second, I wanted some stylist suggestions. I have really fine hair that doesn't take to perms very well but I love love love my hair curly.  So I'm looking for a stylist who is good at perms, charges decently, and won't over process and fry my hair.

THANKX!!!!!

Update on books. They're on their way to Columbus, with an ETA of the 22nd. That's not a guaranteed date. When they do get here, I'll need either a broker or a bunch of documentation signed by the customs authority. Plus according to this documentation I'm reading, I may not be able to pick it up the day it arrives, since it mentions a 24-48 hour post-arrival period of buttfingering. So even if it does arrive on the 22nd, the day before I leave for San Diego, there's the distinct possibility I can't touch the shipment until after I'm gone.

Updated best-case scenario: I enlist one of my in-town friends to pick up a literal ton of books, and have them over-night me a few boxes for a lot of money so I can have books on the last half of the convention.

Grarrgh.

In better news, The Dark Knight was fantastic. I feel kind of useless saying so, since everyone in the world says it's the fuckin' bomb, but it was fantastic.

We're off to see The Dark Knight, after all.

So hooray? I got a call from the guys in LA who received my book shipments from China! THEY STILL HAVE THEM. I need a broker? And more money? And they won't arrive until the 22nd? (Though I'm not holding my breath.) So assuming I can release them tomorrow and actually, amazingly get them on the 22nd, it means I'm either overnighting some 44-lb boxes to San Diego or smuggling as many as I can into our suitcases.

And if I don't pick them up in five days once they arrive in Columbus, I pay a storage fee. Which is great, because I'll be in San Diego for longer than that. So if they arrive one day late, I'm kinda fucked.

IT IS FANTASTIC.

In possibly sunnier news, I'm bringing a portfolio to our Comic-Con booth full of original art pages with added dialog balloons. I've chosen a few I think will go over well, but if you're going, and are interested in buying a strip from the past from me, let me know! I will do my best to put it together for you so you can buy it there. Just send me an email with the date and/or URL of the desired strip, and I'll let you know if it's available and/or possible.

Amazon Drunk-filter

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'm sure we're all aware of the perils of drinking and then going shopping on Amazon.com, right? Well, it seems they've installed software that can detect when you've been drinking and stop the site from working in that event. At least, that's what's happening to me now.

See, [info]fyreflyblue recently purchased all 7 seasons of Buffy, because they were on super-crazy sale. On a whim, I stopped by this evening (while drinking a large glass of Malbec) to check it out myself. Sure enough, each individual season is only $19.99, bringing the total for the six seasons I don't have to a whoppiong $120 (as opposed to $180 for the boxed set, or $240 for those six seasons at "regular" pricing).

of course, as soon as I put them all in my cart and get ready to head to checkout (after begrudgingly removing all five seasons of Angel (also super-discounted)), the site stops working. Like, my computer just can't find Amazon anywhere. It can connect to every other site I try, but not Amazon. boo. (but also maybe "yay"? at least insofar as my credit card is concerned?)

::EDIT::
Amazon stopped being pissy, and I now have 6 seasons of Buffy headed my way. So much for getting the credit card debt paid off by the end of August, eh? I guess that's been pushed back to the end of September now. ugh.
